Norwich City Concert Band
Norwich City Concert Band (NCCB) is a committee lead band, with members covering a wide range of musical abilities. Founded in 1997, from a four-member ensemble, NCCB was seen as an opportunity to bring together like-minded musicians who enjoy playing together in a friendly group. We now have a band that comprises over 36 active members whose enthusiasm and dedication has resulted in the band performing concerts to a very high standard and rewarding the community with great music!
In recent years NCCB has embarked on many tours across Europe and the UK, firstly to the picturesque Menin Gate Ieper in Belgium and later on to the cultural Dutch town of Valkenburg. We celebrated our 15th anniversary tour in Cowes on the Isle of Wright and our most recent venture was up to Nantwich, Chester and Alvaston Hall where we visited the National Arboretum. Each of these tours has been hugely successful uniting the band musically and socially.
Unlike many concert bands across the UK NCCB is self-financing and we have, over the years, been able to give back to our local charities by raising in excess of £14,000 for many good causes such as Musical Keys, Big C, Stepping Stones, The Hamlet Centre, Sistema and most recently for 2017 the Benjamin Foundation.
Musical Director – Brian Dermott
Brian Dermott started playing the flute at a young age and began his musical career by enlisting as a flautist for the Duke of Wellington’s Regimental Band in 1965. Graduating from the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall in 1971 Brian then went on to tour widely as principle flautist in over 6 countries of which one was playing at the fall of the Berlin Wall. Before retiring, from the Army, in 1991 he took up the post of Band Sergeant Major of the King’s Regiment where he was responsible for the swift military organisation of the Band.
As a conductor, Brian has conducted for various bands over the years his wide range of musical tastes ideally suits to directing Norwich City Concert Band. NCCB has a comprehensive repertoire from all genres such as classical overtures, original concert band compositions, stage and screen, pop, rock and swing as well as your traditional marches. Brian enjoys the challenge of getting the band to perform at its best, and with a group of enthusiastic amateurs who range from young to old it can be a challenging at times! , but the results are always rewarding as he makes the band fun for all members and audiences.
In 2002, Andrew Sinclair (BBC Look East), was appointed the band’s first Vice-President, and in the same year, Andrew compered the band’s 5th Anniversary Concert in the Assembly Rooms in Norwich. Andrew was later appointed the President of the band in 2007.
During 2010 the band moved rehearsal venues from Bignold School to Mile Cross Methodist Church Aylsham Road due to needing more space for the ever exspanding band membership.
In 2011 the band went on tour again performing in both Valkenburg Holland and Monschau Germany.
On Saturday 20th October 2012 the Band performed it’s 15th Anniversary concert in Mile Cross Methodist Church Norwich.
Saturday 25th October 2014 the Band recorded a new Cd at the Atrium North Walsham which will be on sale for £7. The day was a great experience for all the members who played so well all day.
May 22nd 2015 the Band went on Tour to Cheshire performing in Nantwich, Chester and Alvaston Hall. Visiting The National Memorial Arboretum before returning 25th May.
